AAP, Shiromani Akali Dal demand SIT probe into ’84 anti-sikh riots

The Aam Aadmi Party and the Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) on Wednesday demanded an SIT probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi admitted some party members’ involvement in the violence.
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal met Lt Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday morning to submit his request demanding a special investigation team (SIT) probe.

“I have met the LG and talked to him about an SIT probe into the 1984 riots case. He is very positive towards this issue,” Kejriwal told the media here after his meeting. The 1984 anti-Sikhs riots was a riot directed against Sikhs in India, by anti-Sikh mobs, in response to the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, there were more than 3000 deaths.

“The constitution of the SIT and the terms of reference will be finalised in the next cabinet meeting,” Kejriwal added.

An official later said that during the meeting, which lasted about half an hour, the LG has assured that his request would be considered and the prime minister (Manmohan Singh) will be informed,” an official said.

 

In Riots, Trilokpuri, Shahdara, geeta colony,Mongolpuri, Sultanpuri and Palam Colony were the worst affected areas.

 

SAD president Manjit Singh GK told reporters that now that Gandhi has acknowledged the role of Congress leaders in the riots, he should take action against them too.

“We don’t want an apology but action against culprits in the 1984 riots. We demand an SIT probe,” Singh said, adding that an agitation would be organised outside the Congress headquarters at 24 Akbar Road on Thursday morning.

The 1984 riots, which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Sikhs across the country, were triggered by the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards.

    Dear AAP,

    Do NOT sound to be pairing up with a corrupt and rotten lot like SAD. It will kill your credibility. SAD is responsible to an extent for the plight of riot victims.

    Please show the courage to raise your voice against misdeeds of Badals in Punjab.
