Breaking: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal ends dharna, two cops sent on leave

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal called off his dharna against Delhi Police after two SHOs of Malviya Nagar and Pahar Ganj were sent on leave.

In exchange, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, who is the Centre’s representative in Delhi, has promised to fast-track an inquiry against policemen targeted by Mr Kejriwal’s party for alleged inaction.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s unprecedented dharna in Delhi came to an abrupt end on Tuesday night after two police officers were sent on leave under a neat compromise with the Centre over his demand for suspension of five officials for alleged dereliction of duty.

His head wrapped with a woollen muffler, Kejriwal told the media and an army of supporters in the heart of the city that he and his ministers were ending the protest begun Monday “right here” — outside Rail Bhavan, near the Rajpath boulevard where the Republic Day parade takes place.

The over 30-hour protest outside Rail Bhavan in the high-security Raisina Hill area that virtually morphed into a demand for control over Delhi police and threatened to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations on Sunday ended following an assurance from the Lt Governor Najeeb Jung.

Kejriwal, who had slept last night on the road and held cabinet meetings with his colleagues in his car, announced that he was calling off the protest following the “victory” achieved by the people of Delhi.

Earlier in the day, he ruled out any negotiations and threatened to flood the Rajpath with his supporters for disrupting the R-Day celebrations.

Under the compromise, the SHO of Malviya Nagar, who refused to raid an alleged drug and prostitution ring on the orders of Law Minister Somnath Bharti, and PCR van in-charge of Paharganj, where a Danish women was gangraped last week, were sent on leave, paving the way for an end to the confrontation with the Centre.

Appealing to Kejriwal to withdraw his agitation, the Lt Governor said the judicial inquiry into the alleged police inaction would be expedited.

The compromise meets only half-way Kejriwal’s demand that five officials be suspended in connection with these two incidents apart from burning of a girl allegedly by her in-laws.

Kejriwal read out from the letter of Jung who appealed to him to call off the agitation “in view of the sacrosanct occasion of the Republic Day and the perceived security situation”.

The Chief Minister claimed that the police have arrested the culprits in the case of a rape of woman, which was also one of his demands that triggered the agitation.

The announcement sparked off full-throated cries of “Inquilab Zindabad” and “Vande Mataram” from the mass of supporters.

Jung stepped in to defuse what was developing to be a major crisis for the central government after Kejriwal threatened to continue his sit-in indefinitely, and police and Aam Aadmi Party activists clashed more than once leaving several people injured.

Jung urged Kejriwal to withdraw the protest “in view of the sacrosanct occasion of the Republic Day and the perceived security situation”.

He promised that a judicial inquiry ordered against allegedly errant policemen would be expedited and in the meantime two police officers would be sent on leave.

At least 30 people, including 19 policemen, were injured on Tuesday when Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters clashed with the police during a sit-in here.

Over 100 AAP protesters on Tuesday forcefully entered Rafi Marg that leads to the protest site after pushing through barricades, resulting in a clash with the police.

Earlier, Kejriwal said he was determined to continue the protest near the Rail Bhavan, where he and his cabinet members were stopped on Monday while on their way to the union home ministry to demand that the Delhi Police be brought under their control and action taken against five police officers.

Police tried to stop the advancing AAP volunteers who did not pay heed, resulting in a scuffle.

“One of our policeman suffered a broken nose,” said the officer.

Meanwhile, an AAP leader said three people, including a woman, have been admitted to a hospital while six others who received minor injuries were discharged.

The AAP supporters had earlier pelted stones at police officials and injuring constable Dinesh Gupta, posted at the Mukherjee Nagar police station, who was hurt near his eye and was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where his condition was stable.

“They (AAP) are pelting stones intermittently. We will take legal action as required,” Joint Commissioner of Police Mukesh Kumar Meena told IANS.

A journalist, Nagendra Nath Mishra, who tried to enter the protest site was allegedly beaten up by police.
